The Trail

Te Tai Tokerau – Northland

The Far North is a remote region with long, lonely stretches of sand, forests of dense bush, steep hills and fast-rising rivers.

Most through walkers start their epic journey at Te Rerenga Wairua, Cape Reinga at the northern end of the North Island. It’s a spiritual place, so very fitting for what lies ahead. The relaxed seaside towns along the way provide comfort for the weary tramper. They show off the classic Kiwi lifestyle in which seaside holidays are a birthright. The trail includes everything from beach walks to rigorous backcountry hikes. Challenges include crossing several bodies of water. Your choices might include waiting for low tide or appealing to a friendly boatie.
