We’re so excited that the first of this season’s Te Araroa walkers are on their way. And judging by the volume of registrations coming in, it’s going to be a big one!
We love seeing your photos and videos, so please do keep tagging our social media channels so we can enjoy and share. Behind the scenes, we’re also on the move as we work towards our vision of a truly regenerative trail – the world’s first, perhaps. An audit of on-trail infrastructure, establishment of partnerships and conservation programmes are just a few of the initiatives already underway. We’ll share more of this work as we progress.
New Waorahi campsite north of Mangawhai
We’re excited to let you know that there’s a new free campsite on the trail north of Mangawhai. As you come down off the Bryderwyn Hills, you’ll find a shelter, toilet and drinking water, providing walkers with another great option of a place to spend the night. Many thanks to Steve, Bruce and the Piroa Conservation Trust for this amazing contribution to the trail.
New tanks for Richmond Ranges
Four huts in Nelson’s Richmond Ranges have brand-new water tanks being installed this month. Our Nelson Marlborough Trust is working with DOC to install the tanks that were funded by the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT). Thank you to everyone involved.
Trees that Count Partnership
We’ll be planting over one thousand trees this walking season thanks to our new partnership with Trees that Count. Every registered through-walker and Trailblazer will have a tree planted in their name somewhere along the trail. Read more about Trees that Count.
Watch out for bird watcher Colin
Between now and March 2024, Natural History curator Colin Miskelly is walking the length of New Zealand – counting every bird seen or heard along the way. You can hear more of his interesting story on RNZ.
