Te Araroa Trust Statement on Tragic Incident in Hawea Conservation Park on 5/2/25

by | Feb 16, 2025

Te Araroa Trust is deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of a walker in the Hawea Conservation Park. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time. This loss is felt across the entire Te Araroa community, and we stand together in sorrow.

Te Araroa is a journey that connects people with nature, with themselves, and with each other. It is also a journey that demands preparation, awareness, and respect for the ever-changing conditions of Aotearoa’s backcountry. While we do not yet know the full details of this tragedy, we take this moment to remind all walkers of the importance of checking weather conditions, carrying appropriate equipment, and making decisions with safety as the highest priority.

As we grieve this loss, we also reflect on the power of Te Araroa to bring people together in shared experience and mutual care. In that spirit, we acknowledge those that responded to the emergency, fellow walkers, and the Te Araroa community during this time.

He kokonga whare e kitea, he kokonga ngākau e kore e kitea The corners of a house can be seen, but the corners of the heart cannot be seen

This whakataukī reminds us that grief and loss are deeply personal, yet they are also carried by the wider whānau and community. We send our aroha to those mourning this loss and encourage all walkers to continue looking out for one another on the trail.

Ngā manaakitanga,

Te Araroa Trust
