Work on the 56-kilometre hiking and biking trail from Tekapo to Twizel starts Tuesday November 16, and is expected to finish within 10 days.

Christchurch Company CityCare's project manager Brian Keown is in charge of the project. CityCare workers have pre-cut a bridge, ramps, and signage standards, ready to haul the prefabricated material on-site and finish quickly.

The new trail is being funded mainly by the Employment Catalyst Fund, on behalf of the Mayors Taskforce for Jobs. Meridian Energy gave some funding for signage, and the Department of Conservation will pay for two signs on its land.

Te Araroa Trust gained access agreement from Meridian and Land Information New Zealand, who issued licences for passage alongside the hydro canal, and around the shoreline of Lake Pukaki. The Department of Conservation accepted a route across the Pukaki Flats Conservation Area and the Mackenzie District Council has agreed to ongoing maintenance of the route's single new bridge.
