The Auckland region is now at COVID-19 Alert Level 3, while the rest of New Zealand is at Alert Level 2.

The new alert levels came into effect at 11.59pm last night following confirmed cases of COVID-19 in an Auckland household. The New Zealand Government has said the restrictions are planned to last 72 hours, but their duration will be reviewed daily.

It’s important that people considering walking the Te Araroa trail during this time do their part to prevent any potential spread of the virus.

If you are in the Auckland region, please follow the Government’s Alert Level 3 advice. Low-risk walks in your immediate local area are ok, but you must avoid overnight tramps and you should wear a mask and practise physical distancing of two metres at all times. All DOC huts, campsites, lodges and toilets in the region are closed.

If you are located around the rest of New Zealand, please abide by the Level 2 rules. Maintain physical distancing of two metres while walking or staying on the trail, practise good hygiene and make sure to wash your hands regularly (it is a good idea to carry hand sanitiser with you).

Anybody planning to walk the trail – or a section of it – should register on our website to facilitate easier contact tracing if a case of COVID-19 is detected among trail users at any point in future.

Stay safe,

Mark Weatherall
Executive Director, Te Araroa Trust
