Te Araroa to open, 3 December

  • 06 Nov 2011

Te Araroa's opening ceremony will begin at 10 am on Saturday the 3rd of December. The chosen site for the event is Shorland Park, Island Bay, where the North Island trail ends at the seashore – an approximate midpoint.

The Governor-General, Lieutenant General Sir Jerry Mateparae, will open the trail, and simultaneous ceremonies are being organised for the 3,000-km trail’s northern start, at Cape Reinga and its southern end, at Bluff.

The Walking Guide to Te Araroa, written by Te Araroa Trust’s Geoff Chapple and published by Random House, will go on sale the same week as the opening.

The Island Bay ceremony is open to all. More details of that event, and details of the more distant events at Cape Reinga and Bluff will be published on this website over the next few weeks.
