Te Araroa 2015-16 Route Updates Complete
The updates to the 2015-16 Route are now complete and the updated Trail Notes and Maps available for Download.
Please take a moment to read through this so you are aware of key changes - to the route and to the website.
Firstly the website is now mobile/device responsive, and has direct links to the most important pages from the homepage.
- The way tracks are listed has changed quite significantly to now be a collection of long (multiday) and short (day or less) walks. This will be great for section hikers wanting to find logical start-finish points and daywalkers wanting a short Te Araroa experience. For through hikers, it greatly reduces the number of pages of Trail Notes!
- There are four VERY important pages on the website - Downloads (of course!), Trail Status (this is where any diversions, closures, things to note get posted after todays updates), FAQ (a lot of what gets asked via email or on here is covered in this information) and Safety (this has had a lot more information added - a lot of you will be seasoned outdoors people however many also have limited experience and your number one task is to get yourself to the other end of your journey safely).
- In each region, the Trail Index has an additional feature - tracks can now be marked as Open (Green), Closed (Red) or Affected (Orange). If a track is marked as Affected, there will be a change or diversion - though not one that needs the entire track to be closed. Where a track is marked as Affected, refer to the Trail Status page for further info.
As you walk, please take the time to be really across ALL the information - check the Trail Status page regularly and read the Trail Notes in detail. Many of our access arrangements have tight parameters around them - daylight access only, must follow a certain route etc - these are all designed for your safety and ensuring Te Araroa can co-exist with farming and/or forestry operations. They are there for a reason so please follow those instructions - ignoring them and doing your own thing only puts future access at risk. Likewise the "Leave No Trace" principles. In both instances, think of those following behind you, just as there have been others before you.
