Tamahunga Trail - opening soon

  • 05 Sep 2008

A team from Pakiri has begun work on the Tamahunga Trail. The trail goes from Rodney Road above Leigh, across Tamahunga mountain (440 metres) and will exit at a farm on Omaha Valley Road. It's 6 kilometres long - 3 km across farmland, and 3 km through bush on the Tamahunga slopes. Views en route have tremendous reach - Mahurangi and Tawharanui peninsulas to the south-east, the outer Hauraki Gulf islands to the north east, farmland to the west, white beaches stretching away to Whangarei Heads in the north, and Rangitoto and Auckland smudgily visible on the southern horizon. The new trail joins with the existing trail Te Araroa Trust put in recently between Bathgate Road, Pakiri, and Rodney Road. Together the two trails total 8 kilometres. The Pakiri team will complete the track to Back Country Adventurer standard - i.e.well marked, all major obstacles surmounted, but few steps, some steep pinches and boots recommended - in time for the opening on December 16. At 10.30 am that Sunday, Sir Edmund Hillary will declare the track open. The opening ceremony will take place near the Rodney Road-end. Refreshments will be provided. If you want to come along, you're welcome.
