Mackerel Forest Track Opens

  • 02 Dec 2008

Te Araroa has opened a small track as part of a bypass of the notoriously difficult Ngunguru area in Northland.  Just 4 kms, it reduces the amount of road walking required by some 20 km.

While already a popular track with horseriders, Te Araroa has improved the access for walkers. In November, Te Araroa’s Fiona Mackenzie and Noel Sandford worked with Conservation Volunteers to cut back bush and mark the route.

Beginning on Ngunguru Ford Rd, the Mackerel Forest Track follows well-benched logging trails on pine forested hills and riverbanks, crossing the Waitangi and Teheke Rivers. Although part of the forest has recently been harvested, the aesthetics should start to improve after next year’s re-planting. The track ends on Pataua North Road.

Te Araroa appreciates the support of the landowner, Taumata Plantations Ltd, Hancock Forest Managers and our major funder in the North, ASB Community Trust.

For further information on the track, please refer to the Trail Notes page on this website.
