Te Araroa is stiling and bridging two kilometres of newly acquired esplanade reserve four kilometres north-west of Kerikeri township.
The new track goes alongside the Kerikeri River, between Rainbow Falls and State Highway 10.
This is part of the 'Ocean to Ocean' section of Te Araroa, from Ahipara to Kerikeri, a distance of 115 tramping kilometres when complete.
The Ocean to Ocean crosses three forests, and all but 25 kilometres of it is now in place - including some roadwalking between trailheads.
Don't ask us how long that last 25 kilometres is going to take - we're still negotiating with landowners en route, including a Landcorp property. We've also agreed with one of the landowners, Rod Cameron, that we won't open the Rainbow Falls-SH10 leg until we (or someone) has fixed up a carpark on the Waipapa Reserve, one of the new track's entrance points. When we had a digger and concrete truck lined up to dig and pour the bridge foundations last week, Rod kindly allowed the machines access across his land.
The funders included Lottery Grants Board. The Far North District Council paid for half the bridge in the photo.
