Hamilton City is proposing a $279,000 upgrade for the first section of Te Araroa's track west of the city.

In 2005 Te Araroa Waikato Trust laid in a route from Till's lookout on the edge of Hamilton's western Dinsdale suburb, to Taitua Arboretum, an attractive 20-hectare reserve of mature trees, lakes, pasture and trails (picure above).

The Te Araroa track was marked and stiled over fences, but not signposted as it is just the first part of a longer 'City to Mountain' track connecting Hamilton to Pirongia mountain, and not yet complete.

Hamilton City has now swung in behind this first section however. The city's draft Long Term Community Plan, proposes a $279,000 budget in the 2006-2007 year to upgrade the 3 kilometres of track Till's Lookout to Taitua Arboretum to daywalk standard.

At the track's beginning at Dinsdale, the council proposes to lay in a concrete path between Amanda Avenue and Melva Street. It will then metal the track from Till's Lookout to Wallace Road, provide a safe footpath along that rural road, further metal the track from Wallace Road across farmland to the arboretum, and then install signage for the whole route.
