Far North Trail Gets Funding
Te Araroa Trust has received a grant of $20,000 from the Lottery General Millennium SubCommittee for a proposed "Ocean to Ocean" trail in the Far North.
The new trail will start at Ahipara township at the southern end of Ninety Mile Beach. It's planned to cross the old gumfield south of Ahipara, then link with existing Department of Conservation tracks to traverse the four forests - Herekino, Raetea, Omahuta, and Puketi, exiting at DOC's Puketi Forest campground. From there it's planned to cross 18 kilometres of farmland and link with the Department of Conservation's walkway down the Kerikeri River, to Kerikeri township. The trail will be over 100km long.
Te Araroa already has an established route from Keirkeri to Waitangi, opened in 1995. When completed, the new trail will give a continuous walking route Cape Reinga-Opua.
The SubCommittee will hold the money for the Far North trail until Te Araroa Trust raises the remaining $18,000, to secure a total budget of $38,000.
When the whole budget is in place the Trust has an agreement with the Far North Environment Centre's Conservation Corps to begin work on the trail this summer.
