Daltons Track opens

  • 11 Mar 2011

A new 7 km Te Araroa track now leads into one of NZ's great beauty spots - the Pelorus Bridge Scenic Reserve.

Daltons Track begins north of the Scenic Reserve, at Daltons Bridge, and ends within it, giving access to the DOC campground there. DOC's Nelson/Marlborough conservancy assisted the effort with signage installation and a matching track on the reserve to meet up with the incoming route.

Te Araroa Trust thanks the Walking Access Commission’s Enhanced Access Fund for the grant that enabled  TAT's own construction team to complete the track. The route follows mainly a paper road alongside the Pelorus River, and shortcuts sometimes onto the properties of farmers Ewan Wilson, and Kenny and Orla Kyle. We thank those farmers, and ask Te Araroa walkers to respect their request for no dogs on the trail, and no firearms.

The track reduces what was, until the new track opened, an 18-kilometre roadwalk between Havelock and Pelorus Bridge.
