[New track is enticing the locals]

Two Ngunguru locals, Evan and Anna Hamlet, happened upon the new
track last Wednesday and set out to explore.

 

The 7-kilometre Matapouri-Ngunguru track is now open for walking. It's another link in Te Araroa Trust's Northland route, and part of Whangarei District Council's coastal walkway.

 

The track is tramping standard and traverses pasture, pine forest and regenerating bush where local residents are seeking to preserve kiwi - therefore no dogs. Te Araroa Trust put the track in place, and thanks the funder, the ASB Community Trust.

 

Thanks are also due to Matariki Forests, the Department of Conservation, the Whangarei District Council and private landholders for their support. A Te Araroa construction team began the work, but the bulk of it was done by by Northland Park Care. A map and text description of the new track are available on Te Araroa's website under
